Bio

As a composer, Jon Welch has provided scores for documentary films that have been featured internationally on the ARTE and NDR TV networks. The films have also been shown regularly at the Modern Museum of Art in New York. He has also composed music for a popular German TV-series as well as advertising music for Volkswagen, drei.at, Freiberger Pilsener and fgi.

He has composed and produced music and songs for events and industrial films by Philips, Roche, SAP, Samsung, Storck, Tchibo, SAT 1 and Still. He has written pieces for the Munich Philharmonic Brass Ensemble "Blechschaden" and publishes his own concert works through this website.

Starting in 1992 he became increasingly involved in studio production work and to date has arranged the music for commercials for corporate clients such as Becks, McDonalds, Tengelmann, Berliner Kindl, Hidrofugal, Tchibo, AOK, Nivea, DKV, Langnese, Dresdner Bank, T-Online, Telegate, Niederegger and WDR.

As an arranger and musician, he is featured on over 40 albums and many major label releases including CDs by Nevio, Mark Medlock, Christina Stuermer, Roger Cicero, Kim Frank, Tommy Reeve, Stefan Gwildis, Al Bano and The German Tenors.

He founded Jon Welch Music in 2002 in order to concentrate on composing and producing music for artists as well as providing the film and TV industries with music and sound design for commercial, TV and feature film production. Live events, shows and corporate audio represent a further field of activity.
His horn section, the Matterhorns, is featured on over 50 albums and at least twice as many leading advertising campaigns. The Matterhorns have recorded for numerous established producers, artists and music production companies in Germany and continental Europe. These include Dieter Bohlen, Echt, Loona, DJ Sammy, Plevka, Mr. President, Dieter Thomas Kuhn, Tony Christie, Howard Carpendale, Roger Whittaker, Gunter Gabriel, Rolf Zukowski, Jam X Music and BLUWI.

From 1995 to 1997 Jon was the musical director of Stella Events, the event company attached to the giant private German musical company Stella Theater. Here he arranged and oversaw the music for live shows and prepared and directed performances for companies such as Mercedes, E-Plus, Telekom, IBM, BAT, Postbank, Philips, KIA, Avacon, Still and the European cruise ship AIDA. He was also musical director for a series of NDR TV Shows and for the musicals “Freak Out” (70s Show) and “Land of Confusion” (80s Show).
 In 1987 Jon joined the orchestra of the musical “Cats” in Hamburg, Germany’s first private musical theater. He has also performed and recorded with the NDR Big Band, Bobby McFerrin, Chet Baker, Gary Burton, Paquito D’Rivera, Albert Mangelsdorff, Klaus Doldinger, Pee Wee Ellis and Nils Landgren.

He wrote his first professional arrangements in Germany after spending a summer at the arrangers workshop at the Eastman School of Music (USA) in 1986, studying composition and arranging with Bill Dobbins (WDR Big Band director from 1994-2002). Clients included Bill Ramsey, Ron Williams, Daliah Lavi, Taco and the Kessler Zwillinge.
He began working as a professional trombonist while studying at the University of Munich, performing with Harald Rüschenbaum, Al Porcino, Conexion Latina and Charly Antolini.
 
 

Jon Welch graduated from Dartmouth College (USA) in 1984 and came to Germany on a Fulbright Scholarship as a German Studies student.
